Jesus spoke often of "the kingdom of God". As His followers, we should make it our intention to build the kingdom in all that we do. How is this done? By using the gifts and abilities He has given us to serve others in His name, by displaying the worth and glory of God before all who will see.
A flower exalts God, its Creator, by being a beautiful flower. It doesn't have to DO, it simply has to BE. As Christians, we are able to glorify God by being a beautiful expression of who He created us to be. Rather than trying to do for God, we simply need to learn who we are and then be that person. The body of Christ, the church, is the vehicle through which we learn who we are and live it out together.
Our task at First Southern Baptist Church is to help the believer discover how God has made him or her and develop these things so that each one can fulfill his or her potential as a disciple of Christ. To that end we offer gift inventories, Bible studies and other resources, as well as opportunities to use the unique gifts that God has given in the church and in the community.
What Is a Disciple?
Disciples follow Christ closely, seeking to learn about Him all that they can. They take up their Cross daily so that they might live like Him in every area of their lives (Luke 9:23-24). Theyknow that they have been qualified for eternal life not by their own efforts but by the grace of God (Col. 1:12-14) (Eph. 2:8-9). They long to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ with all who will hear (1 John 4:14). The Great Commission: Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said. All authority in heaven and on earth has beengiven me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always. to the very end of the age.
